We brought them a supply of food that will hopefully help them for this coming two weeks.

Thanks to the house that was donated to them they are now living in much healthier conditon.

This woman came to us when she was pregnant and wanted to make arrangements to give the baby up for adoption. She already has a toddler that she felt she was unable to provide adequate food. The baby is now a month old and the mother does not have enough breast milk. We are helping her by providing formula for her baby. We hope that his will allow the family to stay together.

Several mothers and babies were helped with formula this week. Thank you for these donations. – they make a huge difference to the families that receive them.

Today we had several families come who had malnourished babies and children. The worst case was a 6yr old girl who weighed 22lb. Thanks to all the generous donations that we have received we were able to give out baby formula, provide baby bottles, distribute vitamin drops for babies, vitamins for children,  pre-natal vitamins and vitamins for adults. Thank you for all your donations, they make a  very big difference in the lives of the families that receive them.

Father’s Day is celebrated in Guatemala today, June 17th.
We were able to give out baskets of food to celebrate this occassion
to 60 families yesterday.

Many fathers came with their children to receive the baskets, some
were unable to because of work committments, we had several single
mother families receive baskets of food. All of these baskets were
very gratefully received.

The children all wrote cards to their sponsors to thank them for these
gifts. Even when the skies suddenly darkened and a heavy down pour
came upon us, the children were not going to be deterred from doing
their drawings, we had one family all under plastic sheeting at a
table out in the rain doing their drawings!

Thank you to everyone who sent baskets of food to their sponsored
families and thank you to everyone who sent extra baskets of food so
that we could give them to families that really needed the extra help.

I think the fathers were very happy to be included in this celebration!

Another mother was very happy to receive formula for her baby. She does not have enough breastmilk and the baby was continuously crying from hunger. Thank you for donations to the Food and Milk Program.

Sponsored students Joselin 517, Viviana 519 , their sister and mother were thrilled to receive this wonderful gift of food from their sponsors. The mother is a single mother and works hard to support her children, she goes to peoples houses, washing clothes by hand, she earns approx. $2 US per day when she gets work. In the rainy season, which has already started, she does not get steady work. Having enough food is always an issue for this family. They really appreciate this wonderful gift.

One of the families that benefited from donations for corn this week was Sebastiana’s family. Sebastiana has 10 children. Her husband has been ill for more than a week and unable to work. She came to us to ask for help with food as they had nothing left to eat and thanks to your generosity we were able to give them enough corn to make tortillas for at least two weeks.

The rest of the Mothers Day Baskets were given out to many families yesterday. One young girl came without her mother because the mother was too sick to get out of bed. We were happy that the family were going to have food to eat.

The old man in the photos is deaf and his wife is blind. It was raining so he did not want to bring her out of the house. They are a very poor couple, we have seen them often walking hand in hand down the street, the husband taking great care of his wife, we have also often seen them going through the trash at the market trying to find enough to eat, so we were very happy to include them in the Mothers Day baskets and this food will give them enough to eat for more than two weeks.

Carla and her mother received a gift of food from Carla’s sponsor. Carla’s mother is about to give birth very soon and is unable to work. Carla’s father has abandoned the family for another woman and is not financially supporting them. Thanks to Carla’s sponsor this family has enough food to eat.

Sulmy Mishel is 4 months old. Her mother, Maria Isabel 31yrs old, does not have enough breastmilk to be able to feed her. Maria has 4 other children, 10yrs old, 7yrs old , 5yrs old and 4yrs old. Her husband, Brenner, 29yrs old works in a bakery. He was very ill last year with diabetes and was unable to work. They do not have the possibility of buying formula for the baby.

Thanks to donations to the Milk and Food program we have been able to supply Sulmy Mishel and other infants like her with formula when there is not the possibility of breastfeeding.

Her mother was feeding her with a dropper with just water until Mayan Families brought them formula. This was when she was four days old.

We also sent them to the local pediatrician so that the mother would learn how to best care for the baby.

Children of America have her scheduled to be seen in January on one of their trips to Guatemala. In the meantime, we will keep supplying the family with formula so that this little, as yet, unnamed baby girl will be healthy enough to undergo the operation.

This little baby girl was born in Panajachel on Friday night. Her family has been feeding her through a dropper with sugar water. We have provided the family with formula today and will be sending the baby to the clinic to see the pediatrician so that she can advise the family how to best care for the baby.

Thanks to a very generous grant from a Swiss Foundation we will be able to provide food for this little baby through the Infant Feeding Project of the Food and Milk Program.

This four month old girl from Panajachel was added to our Infant Feeding Project today. The mother does not have enough breast milk to be able to sustain the baby. Her husband has gone to Honduras in the
hope of earning more money but in the meantime she has no money to be able to buy formula.

In the morning we had the yard at Mayan Families HQ absolutely full of mothers and children waiting to get their photos taken, children happily writing letters to their sponsors and joyfully receiving their baskets of food along with a delicious BBQ chicken.

I think that the supermarket in Solola had never received such a large order for BBQ chickens! They did a great job, the chickens were delicious and everyone was so excited about them. It was the first time for many of the mothers that they had ever eaten a rotisserie chicken.

In the afternoon we went to San Jorge and delivered over 95 baskets there. The women had all collaborated and decorated the meeting area with balloons and flowers.

They also all contributed approx. $1 US and were able to buy enough cakes that all the mothers and children had a slice of cake. They then presented Gloria and I with two very colorful arrangements of silk flowers to show their appreciation.

We packed bags of goodies to give out to the mothers who were not receiving Mother’s Day Baskets – we had little towels, combs, shampoos and soaps that people have given us from their various hotel stays, baby clothes , toothbrushes and toothpaste.

He is pictured here with his grandmother and his 18yr old mother. His grandmother also has a baby the same age as him.

Alex is malnourished and we are providing him with formula to nourish him and build him up for his upcoming trip to the U.S. He is going to be operated on for his cleft palate. Alex will be fostered in the U.S. with a family that is very excited to have him come.
